Well Suited: Celtic FC & Ralph Lauren
Designer suits and footballers are two things we like to hear in the same sentence. Chelsea has Dolce & Gabbana, Barcelona has DSquared2 and now the lads of Celtic have Ralph Lauren to call their own.
The legendary American designer has become the first official outfitter in Celtic’s illustrious 123 year history. The Ralph Lauren Black Label gray wool suits are cut to fit tight (no complaints from us) and the green and silver striped ties emulate the iconic hoops of the team’s home kit. All of the players were given a style guide on how to properly wear their new duds; oh to have been a fly on the wall in that room.
While this is Ralph Lauren’s first foray into designing for a football team, but the brand counts David Beckham as one of its devotees. Luckily for Celtic, one of their board members just happens to be the President for Europe for Ralph Lauren. Glasgow-born Brian Duffy said of designing the look, “We really wanted to avoid the classic overly-flash footballer look with the big wide tie which doesn’t coordinate with the suit.”
Why whatever does he mean? Footballers are always capable of dressing themselves. Their attire never makes one recoil in horror and immediately reach for a copy of GQ to remind oneself what proper men’s attire looks like.
Or perhaps not. Well played, Celtic.
